Lake ONtario

This house is in Burlington with Lake Ontario waterfront. The simulator room is in the basement with this view. To the right side of the simulator screen is a covered outdoor patio with a hottub. To the left is a glassed-in car elevator.

This was a new build, so we were able to get the simulator specs on the drawings from the beginning and were able to check in during construction to ensure things didn’t change.

ONE thing we see often in new build projects is other changes in the home design necessitate changes in the golf room. Designers and builders always work with the best intentions for the homeowner, but small changes can big impacts in simulator rooms where space is often at a premium. Things like HVAC can cause significant problems if trunk lines suddenly need to be run through the area. In this case, a new trunk line was installed at the back of the room and impacted the location of the Projector.

Thankfully, we were able to cut into the bulkhead and recess the projector partway and still make it work effectively.

The client chose TrackMan as the simulator engine and here you can see the (almost) finished room.

Multi Use Room

This is a beautiful house in Toronto’s very affluent Forest Hill. A lot of golf rooms suffer from incursions to the space from HVAC. In this case we had plenty of ceiling height, so we were able to comfortably come under the new bulkhead and design a custom ceiling frame.

As with most new home projects, space allocation requires buy in from all family members. In this case the space was meant to co-exist with the family gym, which is not always as easy as it sounds.

The client did not want turf as a permanent floor and wanted a retractable curtain on the open side. A hard wood floor is certainly not my first choice for several reasons, but it is possible – we resolved to these two solutions:

  1. A portable strike mat that can be lifted and rolled to a corner and out of the way. InHome Golf built this custom mat at 6’ x 4’, with wheels!
  2. We added interlocking rubber gym flooring directly in front of the screen to stop the ball from bouncing like crazy after it drops from the screen.

The Result is a functional golf simulator room that can be partially moved aside for use as a gym!

office simulator

InHome Golf is not restricted to InHome! You can put a simulator in your office! Like this office in a business park in Utah looking out to the mountains in distance!

Imagine walking to your office down this hall every morning with that mountain view on one side and this simulator on the other?

Excavation

This client did not have enough ceiling height. He had 7’6”. That is usually game over. 9’ is generally the minimum you need. We have gone shorter but only under clear direction from the client.

So, the choices here were clear: 1. Don’t install a simulator, 2. Move to a bigger house, or 3. Excavate to get more height and that is what the client chose to do.

At InHome Golf we don’t do that kind of work, but we can recommend people that do – especially after seeing how these guys did it!! Here are the POST excavation photos – all the concrete and earth was removed through those windows on the right!

You’ll notice in the finished pictures below that there are no side curtains or any wall padding of any kind. We do not recommend this but if a client insists…? When I asked, ‘what happens if your buddy slams a hole into the sheetrock?’ he said, ‘Then I’ll get a Sharpie and have him date and sign it!’

Ok… still not recommended!

Lake Joseph

Muskoka Ontario is known for its beautiful lakes and forests. Lake Joseph is one of the premier locations and this project is a gorgeous guest cabin set back from the waterfront. The sim room has a hip roof design on the inside. So, the simulator frame needed to fit in without extending out with ceiling protection.

The turf is inset into the hardwood floor that surrounds on three sides. The width of the turf area is narrower than the screen – which gives the impression of an extra-large impact screen!

We then added a rough turf perimeter with a straight transition to the putting surface, where you can also see two inset putting cups. Electronics including the simulator PC and audio equipment are hidden into shelving on either side of the screen.

Golf Shed

Garages and outbuildings are a popular location for golf simulators and can pose many issues. The best way to clear up most issues is to dedicate the space complete to the simulator. Then you don’t have competing uses getting in the way. A good example is garage door hardware that can restrict your swing radius and projector placement. In this case the client removed an older structure and rebuilt with the sole purpose of a simulator.

We added soft padded walls for a nice, finished look, and added 12” of rough turf on the sides for a fairway to rough feel. The Uneekor QED is mounted on a drop-down platform that housed the wiring and electrical outlet.

The client added bag racks to the big barn doors that open to the yard so in the nice weather they can extend the usable space.

Roll Away Screen

Here is a really cool innovation. These screens and curtains are on tracks and can roll away into the side walls when not in use. We installed curtain tracks and wheels into the ceiling and then they drywalled up to the tracks so they sit flush with the ceiling.

I’ve never been a huge fan of the drop-down screen. I prefer a fully installed screen that creates proper tension on both sides so the screen maintains its integrity while being struck SO this was a particular challenge. The screen on the right side is fully mounts inside a closet so when it is pulled out the right side is already properly attached. The left side is manually connected with short bungee cables with hooks.

This allows you to adjust the tension to have a proper and safer simulator impact screen.

The Strike Mat is the InHome Golf custom portable mat with wheels and a handle for maneuvering.

TaylorMade Performance Lab

When the guys at TaylorMade wanted to refresh their 3 simulator bays they came to InHome Golf! This project involved three components:

  1. InHome Golf Premium Impact Screens. We import this special material and custom make every screen to fit. There is nothing on the market like these screens. They are quiet with minimal kick back; they have excellent reflective quality so your projected image shines and they can take high speed golf balls – especially for the high-performance players at TaylorMade!
  2. Side wall graphics. TaylorMade provided the artwork and InHome Golf installed high impact panels with scuff resistant laminate. Each Bay is unique to Tiger, Rory and DJ!
  3. InHome Golf added double cut contoured rough turf along both sides for a true golf green feel! And the pièce de resistance – the TaylorMade logo professionally cut and inset into the turf!
